Kåre LarssenDr. Kåre Larssen

was born in Stavanger, Norway, on 19th of August 1937. He is a Norwegian entrepreneur and fisheries specialist, an author and publisher.  He has worked extensively as a project manager, managing director, international consultant and fisheries advisor to the United Nations, as well as commercial projects financed by the World Bank.  Larssen holds a certificate as ship captain, MBA (1982), and Ph.D. (1984).
The subject of his doctoral thesis was the “Management and Development of Fishery Resources in the Indian Ocean”.

  • In 2004, The Polio Home brought out “A Whale of a Life. The Life and Times of Kåre Larssen” paying homage to his long and productive association with the institution.
  • Dr. Kåre Larssen is also an adventurist. He made a voyage to Antarctica counting Penguins and another sixteen days in Spitsbergen counting polar bears (2001).
  • In 2002, Kåre Larssen made expeditions to the Geographic South Pole, the Geographic North Pole and Franz Josef Land. He is the first Norwegian to conquer both poles in the same year. He planted the Norwegian flag on the Poles.
  • One of Dr. Kåre Larssen’s outstanding achievements is the publication of India’s first fishing chart in 1965.
  • In 1995, a statue of Dr. Larssen was unveiled at Espevær (where he now lives) – a gift from India in recognition of the out­standing contribution he has made to the fishing industry.
